You obtain access to the stomach and its contents by inserting a nasogastric tube. This allows you to drain gastric contents, decompress the stomach, collect a gastric contents samples, or introduce a channel into the GI tract. This will allow you to treat intestinal blockage and stomach immobility. In the event of a drug overdose or poisoning, it will also allow for drainage and/or lavage. NG tubes can be used in trauma situations to help prevent vomiting and aspiration, as well as to assess GI bleeding. In the beginning, NG tubes can also be used for enteral feeding.
