India Gets its First Home-Made Vaccine for Cervical Cancer | ISH News
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Cervical cancer in India ranks as the second most frequent type of cancer.
However, to very good news Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla on 12th, July said that the company plans to launch its developed Indian vaccine to treat cervical cancer in women by the end of this year. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Tuesday 12th July granted market authorisation to the Serum Institute of India (SII) to manufacture the indigenously-developed India's first vaccine against cervical cancer. In response to the approval by the drug regulator, Poonawalla in a tweet said, "For the first time there will be an Indian vaccine to treat cervical cancer in women that is both affordable and easily accessible. We look forward to launching it later this year and we thank the #DCGI and Ministry of home affairs for granting approval today." The approval by the drug regulator of Serum Institute of India's anti-cancer vaccine has turned out to be big news for the Indian Health sector as the company had applied to the DCGI seeking market authorisation of the vaccine after the phase 3rd phase of the clinical trial was completed with the support of the Department of Biotechnology.
