Head and neck cancer, an umbrella term for cancers that arise primarily in the mouth, throat and voice box, often require aggressive and extensive treatments that affect some of the most basic human functions.

In fact, treatment often requires patients to relearn how to eat, swallow and talk, and survival rates for these types of cancer haven’t improved significantly in the last 30 years.

Survivors like Joe Koenig and his physician Jose Zevallos, MD, MPH, a head and neck surgeon at Siteman Cancer Center, are doing all they can to ensure research continues to progress—and no one fights it alone.

Joe and his wife, Kim, give back through The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s Illumination Gala to advance research to improve treatments for head and neck cancer and give more hope to patients and families.

As Joe says, “Cancer is a team sport, you will not win alone.”
