@dr.aprilspencer2444 untangles the facts:
Scientists are uncovering new details in the connection between using certain hair straightening products, such as chemical relaxers and pressing products, and an increased risk of cancer in women. Researchers say they are still working to figure out which chemicals in the straightening products could be causing rare uterine cancer.

The 11 year study, was published Monday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggested that hair straightening chemicals are associated with an increased risk of certain hormone-related cancers, including breast and ovarian cancers, and now, a new study links use of hair straightening products with an increased risk of uterine cancer. Black women may be more affected due to higher use of the products, the researchers noted. Some Black women say they feel social and economic pressure to straighten their hair.

It also reinforces a dilemma facing many Black women, some of whom use hair-straightening products to conform to White standards of beauty and professionalism. Research has shown Black women with natural hairstyles -- including afros, twists, braids and dreadlocks -- can face racial discrimination in the workplace.

So what to do? Go natural and potentially harm your career? Or straighten your hair and risk your health?
