Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour is characterized by the formation of aberrant cells in the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors are most commonly found in the stomach and small intestine, however, they can be found anywhere in or near the gastrointestinal tract. Small GISTs measuring more than 2 cm but less than 5 cm are routinely treated using laparoscopy, a less intrusive procedure. For tumors larger than 5 cm that can be safely removed, open (or extensive) surgery may be an option.
