During surgery for colorectal cancers, a part of the affected colon (intestine) or rectum will be removed along with the cancer. To aid in the recovery, prevent infections and promote safe passage of the faecal matter, a small outlet (stoma) will be created surgically on the abdomen where the intestine will release the faecal matter. This outlet is connected to a bag called a colostomy bag which collects the faeces and can be cleaned by the caregiver. This may be permanent or temporary based on the part of the intestine that has to be removed to cure cancer.

As part of colorectal cancer awareness month and to reduce fear & apprehension regarding this life-saving treatment option, we share with you a demonstration video by Uma sister, Nursing Supervisor and Ostomy care nurse. She explains in detail the simple steps to clean and change the colostomy bags. The bag will be concealed by the patient’s clothes and will not cause much discomfort in carrying out their day-to-day activities.

Let us share, make aware and make cancer rare!
