Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix —Human papillomavirus (HPV), play a role in causing most cervical cancer. All women are at risk for cervical cancer. It occurs most often in women over age 30. The main types of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
Pap test and HPV tests are the Screening tests. Pap test looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately. The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause these cell changes. Cervical cancer stage ranges from stages 0 to 4. Colonoscopy and Cervical Biopsy confirms the diagnosis.
Most early-stage cervical cancers are treated with a radical hysterectomy operation. Treatment of cervical cancer may include Immunotherapy, Radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Cervical cancer is generally viewed as treatable and curable, particularly if it is diagnosed when the cancer is in an early stage. Cervical Cancer (HPV Vaccine) is presently sold under the commercial name Gardasil and Cervarix. HPV vaccine is given to girls and young women from 9 to 45 yrs to prevent cervical cancer, caused by HPV strains 16 and 18.
