Bone Cancer and Bone Metastasis - The Difference.
Dr G Satish Reddy, Head of Ortho-oncology, Aster Prime Hospital, Hyderabad discussed the difference between bone cancer and bone metastasis.
Cancer can be broadly classified into two things :
Carcinoma: Cancer arising from the tissues and organs (Lungs, liver, etc)
Sarcoma: Cancer arising from connective tissues Bone cancer is usually sarcomas.
However, when cancer spreads from the originating area to a different area it is called Metastasis.
Example: Bone cancer can spread to the lung and liver cancer can spread to the lung.
There are carcinomas like stomach, breast, or prostate carcinoma that can also spread to the bones.
To conclude, bones can have primary sarcoma as well as bone metastasis.
