The traditional staging method (TNM staging) focuses on the factors such as tumors, lymph nodes spreading, and metastasis. But this staging method does not include various other factors responsible for liver cancer.
BCLC staging method is an advanced staging technique that is used instead of the TNM method as it incorporates various factors that are excluded in the traditional staging methods.
BCLC staging method has 5 stages: Stage 0, Stage A, B, C & D.
BCLC stage D is where the liver is damaged to a great extent, the patient is bedridden, and the spread cancer in lymph nodes.
Stage 0 & stage A – are the patients who are fit and healthy, who have a good functioning liver, and the liver tumor is smaller than 3 cm. In such cases, aggressive surgical treatment is possible which provides great results.
In stage B, the patients are recommended to undergo chemoembolization. And stage C patients are normally recommended chemotherapy & targeted therapy.
