Burkitt Lymphoma is a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma affecting B-cells. It is typically caused by a t(8;14) translocation, moving the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to the heavily-expressed heavy-chain immunoglobulin locus on chromosome 14. This increases expression of c-myc, inducing cell proliferation which eventually leads to cancer. The endemic form of Burkitt lymphoma typically presents with a jaw lesion, and is associated with Epstein Barr Virus infections. On biopsy of Burkitt lymphoma, a starry sky appearance is classically seen, with sheets of lymphocytes interspersed with bright, tingible-body macrophages.
